A Fork in the Road: How to Choose Your Direction

The decision deadline is coming up! If you’re reading this blog post, you may be completely stuck as to which university and program to commit to. I was in the exact same boat when I was trying to choose. I have compiled some main tips that I learned from the process of both choosing a program, and choosing a university to go to. Program Tips

  • Look into careers

Think about what you want to do after university. What sort of education do you need to get there? Remember that your career does not have to be linear, so don’t stress and feel trapped in a specific career if you pick a specific program. However, thinking of an idea of a career is important, as being a programmer vs. a physiotherapist requires a very different education!

  • Look into the course content of your degree

Research what sort of courses are required in the degree. If the courses sound cool and exciting that is a good sign! It is also a good idea to look into the various electives that can be incorporated into your degree.

  • Talk to someone in the program

There is no one better to talk to about a program than someone in the program themselves. If you have a friend or relative in the program, ask them to have a quick chat! If you don’t know anyone in the program, look on Linkedin for current students in the program. Make sure to ask about workload, exams, study groups, difficulty, etc.

University Tips

  • Make a list of what’s most important to you

Your university is where you will be living for the next four years. It’s important that you pick a university that suits your most important needs. Start off by making a list of what’s most important to you in terms of your university decision. This may include the want to save money, the want to move away, the want to stay home, the want to experience a new province, etc.

  • Visit campus!

If you can, definitely visit the campus in person! Whether it be a tour or walking the campus yourself, it is a very valuable experience to see if the campus fits you as a person. Online campus tours are also a good resource!

  • Talk to anyone who goes there

The best way to hear about campus is to talk to someone living there! People are always so enthusiastic to talk about their schools, don’t feel like you’re being annoying. We want to help!

  • Look on Reddit!

Reddit honestly might be the biggest advice for looking at universities. There is a bunch of opinions and information on there about residence, campus life, programs, university culture etc. University websites will tell you what you want to hear, Reddit will tell you genuine student opinions!

  • Youtube and TikTok

Youtube and TikTok are great resources for learning more about a specific university. Look up campus tours, a day in my life videos and more! There is a ton of content out there. In the end… It’s all up to you! Definitely talk to friends and family to get their opinions, but the only person who can decide is you. After doing lots of research, take some time for self-reflection and think about what would be the best fit for you as a person. You got this! Good luck 😊
