How I Reset for the Semester

Finishing up a semester of school can be hard and, as we all know with every ending comes a new beginning. So how can you prepare for a new semester?

Well, after three years of University I have developed 4 major tips that help me reset for a new semester and that I hope can now help you.

1. Reflect on Last Semester

The end of a semester always makes me emotional as each semester includes good memories with friends, a new favorite course, and many accomplishments to be proud of. On the other hand, we can't overlook the day-to-day stresses, the feelings of doubt, and the major disappointments that we all experience during a semester of school.

To let go of all my negative memories from the last semester, I start by making a list of things that annoy me from the past year. Get everything out of your system and release that pent-up anger, don't let it weigh you down as you step into a new semester.

Once I have taken time to process everything, I'm ready to go through the files on my computer to get rid of old projects, reports, and practice problems I no longer need. The same goes for physical copies. You don't have to get rid of everything, in fact in many cases old notes can come in handy for future classes but clearing out space will help clear out your mind.

2. Treat Yourself

After finishing a semester it's important to acknowledge all the hard work you did and treat yourself! Binge-watch a show on Netflix, have an at-home spa day, sleep in or, buy yourself something you've been wanting for a while. Whatever you decide, do something just for you that makes you happy, you earned it!

3. Gather Supplies

Leading up to the new semester you're going to need notebooks, pens, paper, and any number of school supplies. So, take some time to review what you liked and didn't about how you took notes and organized your time, then make a plan of attack. Once you've decided what you'll need for the new semester, have fun going to the store to pick up some new items or save money and use things you already have. Either way, organize your supplies and familiarize yourself with any new software, your future self will thank you.

4. Make Time for Yourself

This last step is the newest addition to my tips and tricks but can't be overlooked because mental health is important and integral to succeeding in school.

Take some to make a list of things you need in your life either every day or weekly to be happy and make a point of doing them during the new semester. This can truly be anything from spending time outside every day to eating breakfast to talking to a friend. While these may seem like small tasks when you take time to do things that bring you joy you can actively improve your own happiness and have something to look forward to every day.
