Our names are Brooke and Andrea, and we are the 2021-2022 High School Outreach (HSO) coordinators for Queen's WiSE. We are so excited to be running HSO this year and have many exciting events and initiatives planned, with a focus on providing mentorship and inspiring girls in high school to pursue a degree and or career in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields. We also aim to provide insightful advice to help prepare high school students for the transition into a university or college STEM program.
Forum Tab
A main goal for creating this blog was specifically for high school students to ask any questions they may have about university life, STEM, applications, extracurriculars and everything in between. Check out the Forum tab to ask your own questions or access previously answered questions. You will have to sign-up for an account to submit questions, but once you sign up, you will be able to use the same account every time. Throughout the year, we also hope to publish posts from HSO mentors about STEM and university-related topics so be sure to regularly check out the Forum tab.
Events Tab
The events tab is where you can stay up to date on the latest live events we will be hosting. This Fall, we will be holding three live (through zoom) events. These events take place on October 21, November 8, and November 24, all from 7-8pm Eastern Standard Time. Hover over each event title to find out more information about the specific event and to find the zoom link for the event. We encourage high school students of all ages to attend these free events.
Mentors Tab
New to the HSO program this year, we are putting a focus on mentorship between university students in STEM and high school students. Browse through this section to read the bios for all the 2021-2022 mentors. We have a great team this year ranging from 1st-years to a second year Master's student, in all types of STEM programs. If there's a mentor who is in a program you are interested in pursuing or you are even just looking to get general advice, feel free to reach out to any of the mentors through the emails provided in their bio. You could also submit your questions in the Forum tab which could be beneficial for other students using the blog to read.
We hope that this blog can be a great resource for you to learn more about our events and have the opportunity to connect with our HSO mentors. If you have any suggestions or comments, feel free to reach out to us through email or through submitting a question in the Forum tab.
